Following a decisive opening pre-season fixture away to Gary Waddock’s Aldershot yesterday, Jim Magilton spoke to Sky Sports News. Although the new boss didn’t always look calm and relaxed, as he watched his new boys go through their paces in this, the first of seven pre-season friendlies, he was very positive about the Rs’ chances in the looming 2009/2010 season.

An emphatic 4-0 victory, courtesy of goals by midfield maestro Akos Buzsaky (hands off Stoke!), followed by our strikers: Helguson, Agyemang and Blackstock, got Magilton’s career as Rs boss off to a flying start.

We shouldn’t underestimate Aldershot who had already played a couple of friendlies before yesterday, following a very successful season last time out. And we shouldn’t forget the disaster of last year’s pre-season friendlies – so it was good to see us win so convincingly.

‘They are certainly better than 11th,’ claimed big Jim about our team after the match.

‘I think if you can get a little bit of momentum, especially at our level. The Championship is a really tough division and every game, every Saturday, you’ve got to be focussed on your job, and you’ve got to really grind out results.

‘I think that if we can get off to a good start then anything is possible at this level!’ Magilton concluded.

As the Sky Sports News interviewer pointed out – there lie greater challenges ahead than yesterday’s for the Rs – but, I think, this was a good start for us. It was particularly great to see the likes of Buzsaky not just play for 45 minutes, but score and create chances, including the one from which Helguson scored, as if he hadn’t missed most of last year through injury.

And it is looking possible that Blackstock may have a future at QPR as well – so long as he keeps on sticking the ball in the net for us! Yesterday, of our 4 strikers, only Vine didn’t actually score – not a bad start! (OK, David Connolly didn’t score – but, technically, he’s not ours – yet?!)

So – off to Slovenia now – let’s see what that trip brings us!
