Former QPR midfielder Steve Lomas has landed a managerial job with a non-league side.

Steve Lomas was today named as the manager of United Counties Premier League side St Neots Town, which is his first managerial role since retiring from the game as a player.

The former Manchester City and West Ham United midfielder takes over at Rowley Park with the side on a run of four successive defeats, seeing them slump down into the relegation mire.

He had been previously linked with the vacant post at Colchester United, but was overlooked for experienced boss Paul Lambert at the Colchester Community Stadium.

The Northern Ireland international outlined his ideas and ambitions to the huntspost as he takes on the Saints post.

He said: ‘It’s pretty hard to get into management and when I came here I saw the facilities, I was very impressed with John’s [Delaney] ambitions and the boys seemed like a nice, honest group of lads.’

‘Everything is a challenge and I want to win the league and I’m not coming here to sit mid table. I want to manage at as high a level as I can and my first priority is to assess the squad and add strength so we can make a title challenge next year and we have to set those high standards to succeed.”

Lomas signed for the R`s in August 2005 under Ian Holloway and made 57 appearances for QPR scoring two goals.

He played an integral role in John Gregory`s side that avoided the drop from the Championship in 2007, but was released to sign for his final club Gillingham in the summer.
