Heidar Helguson gave a stark assessment of the 2008-09 season and indicated that finishing was the sides major downfall – not injuries.

The Icelandic international only has eyes for Championship glory next season but believes Rangers – himself included – have to sharpen up in front of goal to achieve this.

Speaking to QPR.co.uk the former Watford and Bolton striker gave a damning assessment of his own displays and the performances of QPR this season.

He said: ‘I believe this season was a disappointment,

‘I think all the players feel that way because we should have done better.

‘With the squad we have here, we should have made the play-offs, there’s no doubt about that.

‘And if we made no changes to this current squad I am confident we would finish in the top-six next year.

‘The target next season is simple – promotion. That has to be the aim.’

The Icelandic international made 15 starts for Rangers, coming from the bench five times over two spells scoring five goals.

The onus was on Helguson to perform following injuries to Patrick Agyemang and the release of Dexter Blackstock on loan – but he struggled to live up to the pressure, failing to score in his final ten games of the season with his final goals coming in January against Blackpool.

‘We didn’t score enough goals, it’s as simple as that,’ Helguson continued.

‘Personally, if I had taken more of my chances I’m confident I would have scored ten or 15.

‘I missed loads of opportunities, and that’s a real disappointment for me.

‘Creating chances was never a problem for us – we created loads. We just didn’t take them, and that’s where we went wrong.

‘Everybody has injuries. We had our fair share, but this squad is big enough and we should have been able to handle it.

‘If you look at the games when we had some key players out, we still created lots of chances. We just didn’t take them.

‘In my opinion, that’s why we didn’t do better this season, not because of injuries.’
