Loan goalkeeper from Manchester United, Tom Heaton stated that QPR’s ambition and former coach David Rouse were two key influences in signing for Rangers.

Heaton penned a three-month loan deal with QPR prior to the Plymouth Argyle fixture and despite being on the cusp of the first team squad at Manchester United opted to come to W12 on loan.

The 23-year-old stopper spoke to the Kilburn Times revealing that all the ingredients were right for him to make the move to Loftus Road.

‘I worked with Rousey for a long time, probably about four years,’ he said.

‘He was absolutely pivotal in my development and I was sad to see him leave United.

‘Once I knew QPR were interested, I jumped at the chance to work with him again. I want to improve myself, to develop and put in the extra work and I feel he shares the belief that I can do that.”

He had his first taste of action against Accrington Stanley in the Carling Cup and revealed that despite getting onto the bench at Old Trafford he preferred to be realistically challenging for the number one jersey – which he does now with Czech stopper Radek Cerny.

‘When you’re in a first-team game it’s only the result that counts and it means a lot more,’

‘You’re playing for the manager, the fans and your livelihood.

‘You learn a lot from playing in the reserves at United because they pass the ball and play the right way, but all you’re doing is improving yourself and the actual result doesn’t matter.”

Heaton played a role in Cardiff City’s playoff push last season but they fell at the final hurdle with Preston North End pipping them to sixth place by beating Queens Park Rangers.

The goalkeeper believed that the experience he had with the Bluebirds with spur him on during his brief spell with QPR – competing and learning from the experienced Cerny.

“It was great to be involved with a team pushing for promotion last season and when I came down to QPR I knew this was a team that would be aiming to try and win the league.

‘I had a lot of respect for Radek Cerny before I came to QPR and that’s only gone up in the last few weeks – he’s a fantastic keeper and a very good guy. But I’ve come here to try and get into the team and stay there.’
