Latvian defender Kaspars Gork?s netted for Latvia as they triumphed while Heidar Helguson also featured for Iceland.

Gork?s was given the captain’s armband for the evening against Malta and despite having to withstand the trickery and pace of Michael Mifsud, drove them to an early lead at the Ta’Qali National Stadium.

Aleksandrs Cauņa’s corner was inch-perfect shortly before half time, and Gork?s rose highest to nod past Andrew Hogg for the opener.

Despite the 3-0 defeat to Croatia previously, Latvia’s confidence had clearly improved and Māris Verpakovskis wrapped up the encounter five minutes from time to secure their first win.

Heidar Helguson featured for 77 minutes as Iceland slipped to defeat away at Denmark in last gasp heart-break for the visitors.

Thomas Kahlenberg latched onto a through ball from former Charlton man Dennis Rommedahl before slamming home in injury time and condemning Iceland to back-to-back defeats.
