Queens Park Rangers defender Kaspars Gork?s spoke of his delight after scoring his first goal in Rangers colours.

The Latvian international had been billed as a goalscoring central defender when joining QPR, after positive goalscoring records with Blackpool and Latvia.

Until now however the defensive rock had made 50 appearances for Rangers without troubling the scorers, but got off the mark in remarkable fashion this weekend.

With the game against Sheffield Wednesday finely poised at one a-piece, Gork?s stooped to nod an Alejandro Faurlín corner beyond Lee Grant – for his first and Rangers’ winner.

Gork?s told QPR.co.uk that he was delighted just as much for the team as himself, with Rangers grinding out an important result on the road.

‘It’s about time!’ said Kaspars.

‘We haven’t been particularly impressive from set-pieces this season, so it was nice to get back to basics and score a simple set-piece.

‘There’s no doubt we’ve got great ability from dead balls, but for one reason or another we haven’t made the most of our set-pieces so far this season.’

The Latvian central defender believes that this has been a positive result for Rangers in light of their below-par display, as they further assert their position on the playoff places.

Gork?s continued: ‘This will give us all a boost though – not just because we’ve scored from a set-piece, but because we’ve ground out a result on the road.

‘If we continue to grind out wins like this, we should be in a really positive position at the business end of the season.’

Rangers now travel to Doncaster Rovers following the international break, looking once again to pick up maximum points in more stylish fashion.
