‘We gave ourselves a great opportunity to progress with that mid-week win, but I think the pressure of the occasion got to a few of the lads.

‘Palermo got their third just before half-time, and that made it ever-so difficult for us.

‘If we’d have played to the standard we’re capable of, we could have won this match, I’ve got no doubts about that whatsoever.

‘Our big players didn’t perform as well as they can, which is a pity.”

Despite disappointed with today`s display Brown believes that it was a valuable experience for his youngsters to be involved in such a prestigious tournament.

He said: ‘But every one of these players will benefit from this experience, and I have to give a special mention to our goalkeeper, Nicki Lee-Bulmer, who pulled off some incredible saves.

‘This was a fantastic competition, a great learning curve and a privilege to have been involved in.

‘My only disappointment is that we’re coming home as soon as we are.’
