Queens Park Rangers midfielder Gareth Ainsworth is being linked today with the vacant managerial post at Lincoln City.

Online fanzine of the year, Vital Lincoln, is reporting that Ainsworth is one of a few ambitious targets put forward by the Lincoln board – including former heroes Graham Taylor and John Ward.

Ainsworth has had two caretaker stints in charge at Loftus Road, the first saw him take charge of QPR’s Carling Cup game with Manchester United at Old Trafford.

He also led 10-man Rangers to a memorable home victory over Birmingham City courtesy of a stunning strike from loanee Samuel Di Carmine.

Since the arrival of Jim Magilton Ainsworth has had to settle with purely a playing role, and speculation surrounding his future has begun to surface.

A return to Lincoln, a club where he is hailed as a hero after two event-filled years at Sincil Bank, where his no-nonsense style helped endear himself to the Imps faithful.

With his playing days numbered, and limited first team opportunity available at QPR it could be an opportunity that Gareth cannot refuse.
