With Alan Shearer sensationally set to take the helm at St James` Park, an ex-R is rumoured to line up in his backroom staff.

Iain Dowie has been linked with the new Shearer regime in Tyneside as the pair look to steer the Magpies away from the relegation mire.

Newcastle sit two points clear in the Premier League drop zone with eight figures remaining. Manager Joe Kinnear has been forced to sit out the rest of the season owing to a heart condition and times are bleak in the north-east.

They have now turned to goalscoring hero Alan Shearer on April Fools Day, in a move which had fans and pundits alike sceptical of the deal`s authenticity. Newcastle themselves have yet to confirm the deal.

If it comes to fruition it will be Shearer`s first managerial role and will bring Iain Dowie back into the game for the first time since his departure from W12 in October.

The duo had worked together on the BBC and look set to take up unenviable task at St James Park of keeping an under-performing club in the top flight.

In other news: April Fools Day was full of its usual joys as Les Ferdinand was linked with a sensational role with Gainsborough Trinity.

Liam Miller was also set to leave QPR today for a move back to Ireland and Dundalk. The aptly names Ms Aprile Fulday of the QPR press office confirmed the deal was ongoing..
