The first Championship managerial casualty of the season as Barnsley boss Simon Davey gets the axe while leaders Cardiff go down at Doncaster Rovers.

Barnsley 1-3 Reading >>>

Simon Davey must have thought that things were picking up when his signing Andy Gray gave the Tykes a much-needed advantage at home to Reading.

When defender Alex Pearce slammed home from close range the momentum fell to the visitors, and a second half double in the space of two minutes from Noel Hunt sent the hosts` fans into a fit of rage and Barnsley were booed off the pitch.

Moments afterwards the Tykes announced Davey`s departure as they contemplate life at the bottom of the Championship after a mere five games.

Blackpool 3-0 Coventry City >>>

The Tangerines brought Coventry City back down to earth with a bump as Ian Holloway`s men record another momentous victory at home following their Carling Cup exploits during the week.

Record signing Charlie Adam got the ball rolling from the penalty spot inside quarter-of-an-hour before goals from striker Ben Burgess and Gary Taylor-Fletcher secured an excellent home win for the resurgent Tangerines.

It is now three games without a win for the Sky Blues after a positive start to life in the Championship.

Bristol City 2-1 Middlesbrough

Nicky Maynard`s fourth and fifth goals in his last six games handed Bristol City an excellent home win over the previously undefeated Middlesbrough.

Both goals were a testament to the record signing`s technique as he first bent a right footed effort into the bottom right hand corner before a handball handed Adam Johnson the opportunity to level matters from the spot.

The winner in injury time was a truly special strike befitting the talent of Maynard, as he volleyed a rasping drive into the bottom ball, showing tremendous composure in the dying stages of the clash.

Doncaster Rovers 2-0 Cardiff City >>>

Without a doubt the shock result of the day as only the most speculative of punters would have had this one on their coupon.

Two first half strikes was enough to see off the Bluebirds, with defender Adam Lockwood opening the scoring and four minutes later James Hayter slammed home the second to leave the visiting supporters thoroughly bemused.

Ipswich Town 1-1 Preston North End

Roy Keane`s Ipswich once again stutter and splutter at Portman Road despite Preston playing the majority of the game with ten men.

Ross Wallace curled home off the post after 12 minutes to hand the Lilywhites the advantage, but after Callum Davidson handled on the line he was given his marching orders for a second yellow.

A perplexing decision by the official given that he denied a clear goalscoring opportunity, and should have received a straight red, but nevertheless Jonathan Walters stuck the ball home at the second attempt after a smart stop from Andy Lonergan.

Nottingham Forest 3-2 Derby County >>>

Another spicy encounter down Brian Clough Way as the A52 derby provided its share of thrills, spills and controversy. Forest coasted to a three-nil lead before half time with Radoslaw Majewski opening the scoring in the opening minute.

Dexter Blackstock notched another to his season`s tally while Nathan Tyson`s goal two minutes before half time looked to have sewed up the encounter – but that wasn`t the last we were to hear from him.

Wes Morgan`s second own goal of the season set Derby on their way and once Tottenham Hotspur loanee Jake Livermore got on the scoresheet, the game took a different perspective. Forest managed to hold on but Nathan Tyson`s antics after the final whistle will undoubtedly snatch the headlines.

In front of the Derby supporters Tyson decided to pick up the corner flag and gesture to the travelling support – a wholly unnecessary gesture which incurred the wrath of the Derby players and supporters.

Plymouth Argyle 1-3 Sheffield Wednesday

Wednesday`s impressive form continues with seven goals in two games displaying their vast attacking potential, while Paul Sturrock`s future at Home Park is apparently hanging by a thread after failing to win in five games so far.

Vital Plymouth`s poll currently has 80% of supporters wanting the boss out of the club and their mood can`t have been improved when Owls defender Richard Wood nodded home from close range after a useful flick on.

Marcus Tudgay doubled the advantage from the penalty spot in the second period before Alan Gow looked to have got his side back in the clash with a fine free kick – his first since joining from Glasgow Rangers.

It was Tudgay at the double however to sew the clash up at Home Park and leave Sturrock on difficult ground with new investors bringing rejuvenated ambition.

Scunthorpe United 0-1 Queens Park Rangers

Sheffield United 2-2 West Bromwich Albion

A top of the table clash at Bramall Lane contained great excitement, something that couldn`t have been predicted going into the break with the sides still goalless.

The game burst into life in the second half when Roman Bednar, fresh from his return from suspension, glanced home the opener. Ched Evans` well-timed header levelled matters infront of a noisy crowd in Sheffield.

Barely four minutes later and the visitors were back ahead, Bednar with his second of the game with another good header before two minutes from time Shaun Cummings brought down Darius Henderson and David Cotterill duly dispatched the penalty.

Swansea City 1-1 Watford >>> >>>

Paulo Sousa`s indifferent start at Swansea City continued as they were held at home by struggling Watford, just days after losing their discipline in a Carling Cup encounter against Swansea City.

Watford took a surprise lead mid-way through the second period when Danny Graham`s powerful drive was too hot to handle for Dorus de Vries.

But Swansea got their just deserts three minutes into injury time when Alan Tate`s looping header caused heartbreak for the Hornets and spared the Swans` blushes.
