New signing Nick Ward has been criticised by the Football Federation of Australia after reluctantly accepting his release to join the R’s.

The attacking midfielder had a trial at Loftus Road before exercising a pre-existing clause in his contract to speak to Rangers about a permanent move to W12.

However, after a transfer offer was accepted from his Perth Glory club the deal needed approval from the FFA to be ratified.

On Monday evening the green light was given and Ward will fly into London next week to sign his new contract, leaving the FFA upset at his decision.

FFA Head of Operations, Matt Carroll said: ‘It’s disappointing to see one of our best local footballers wanting to leave the Hyundai A-League to pursue his football career in a second-tier competition in England. With our recent move into Asia, including the Asian Cup and Asian Champions league, there are many more opportunities for Nick to develop his international standing and experience in Australia rather than in England.’

‘Nick has taken this decision on the advice of his management, and against the advice of the Australian national team management who believe his playing prospects would have been better served remaining at Perth Glory and gaining valuable match time.’

‘The FFA will continue to recruit players for the Perth Glory squad with further announcements expected in the coming weeks. We have also received a number of applications for the Head coaching position and should be in a position to make an announcement prior to the commencement of the Pre-Season Cup.’

‘In relation to the ongoing management of the club, there has also been a fantastic response to the senior management positions advertised within Perth Glory with many well-credentialed applicants showing interest. Once the deadline (30th June 2006) passes we will be looking to interview and appoint shortly afterwards.’
