QUEENS Park Rangers fell to defeat at the hands of FC Groningen, despite a spirited display.

The fixture pitted Tjaronn Chery against his former club, but it was the Dutch side that opened the scoring. Juninho Bacuna swept home after a good point-blank save from Matt Ingram.

Despite Rangers’ useful pressing play, Groningen doubled their lead through an own goal after the break – Cole Kpekawa the unfortunate party, turning home a looping header beyond Matt Ingram.

Jay Emmanuel-Thomas immediately struck back – a good break from Michael Doughty saw him find the front-man, whose heavy first touch was more than cancelled out by a neat shimmy inside and resultant left-footed finish.

It was the Dutch side that extended their lead and won the fixture with substitute Ariel Borysiuk bringing down his man on the edge of the area – adjudged a penalty. Former Fulham man Danny Hoesen netting from the spot.

Hot off the heels of a useful 1-0 win over Dutch champions PSV Eindhoven, this will have been seen as another useful exercise for Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink.
