Steve Tanner from Somerset will take charge of Rangers’ trip to Ipswich Town on Monday afternoon.

The former Premier League official has now returned to the National List of referees after his brief foray on the Select List.

He joined the National List in 2003 before being promoted to the Select List of officials in 2007 after some useful performances in the Football League.

His two year stay in the top flight came to an end with the news that he will once again officiate outside the top flight from the beginning of this season.

In this Monday’s fixture he will be assisted by another fellow demotee, former referee Darren Drysdale who oversaw Rangers’ 2-1 defeat at Reading in 2006.

The other assistant is Paul Martin (Northants) with the fourth official Glenn Hambling (Norfolk), while Tanner takes charge of his ninth QPR game.

So far this season Mr Tanner has officiated 13 games dishing out 40 yellow cards and two reds, giving him a card average 3.23 cards per game.

Refereeing Rangers

In Steve Tanner’s first full season in officiating he oversaw Rangers’ home draw with Oldham Athletic. Former R’s midfielder Paul Murray opened the scoring from distance before Kevin Gallen equalised from the spot.

There was still time for Latics striker Chris Killen to be given his marching orders, and Rangers exacted revenge later that season by knocking Oldham out at the Playoff Semi-Final stage.

After their ultimate disappointment at spending another season in Division Two Rangers were looking a good early bet for promotion – they had a break from their league exploits however with a home cup tie against Swansea City.

The game presided over by Mr Tanner saw three R’s goals and a missed penalty as Kenny Jackett’s men came up short at Loftus Road. Jamie Cureton, Martin Rowlands and Kevin Gallen scored the goals to see Rangers through to a tie with Aston Villa.

Eventually however the R’s were promoted and the following season they faced a Sheffield United side expectant on challenging at the top end of the table. Rangers turned the game on its head with Marc Bircham and Stefan Moore bagging the necessary goals to see off the Blades.

There was time for a consolation for Neil Warnock’s men as Steve Kabba bagged a last minute goal to halve the deficit – but it wasn’t enough for the below-par Blades.

The promoted duo clashed later that season as Plymouth and QPR faced off in their first Championship test. It was the hosts that struck the first blow with Paul Wotton netting a spot kick, before Matthias Doumbe and Nick Chadwick made it three.

There was a second half foray from QPR and they got a deserved goal when Shabazz Baidoo struck his first senior goal from close range – but it was a forgettable day in the South-West for Rangers with seven players booked from ten in total.

The third game of Tanner’s trio that season came as Rangers hosted Crewe Alexandra, but Dario Gradi’s men were far too strong for the hosts as their extra years experience in the Championship told.

Kenny Lunt and David Vaughan struck either side of half time to secure the points, with the only cheer for Rangers coming courtesy of a last minute consolation from Gareth Ainsworth.

Ian Holloway had made way with Gary Waddock given the Rangers post prior to the season – it hadn’t started well for the former midfielder and this was epitomised by the display against Colchester United as the R’s went down in Essex.

Chris Iwelumo and Richard Garcia scored goals inside 20 minutes to double the U’s lead, and only a comical Wayne Brown own goal gave the away fans any cheer as the former QPR loanee nodded into his own net from close range under pressure from Marc Nygaard.

Later in the 2006-07 season and John Gregory had got Rangers fighting for their lives in the Championship and this was on display at promotion chasing Derby County. Iñigo Idiakez received a warm applause from the home crowd upon his return to Pride Park.

Martin Rowlands’ 14th minute opener stunned the hosts who continue to press Rangers relentlessly throughout the 90 minutes. Three minutes from time Billy Davies’ men got their leveller courtesy of Darren Moore and went on to achieve promotion through the playoffs.

The following season it was all change again at Loftus Road with the money-men coming into the club and Gregory swiftly departing. Italian boss Luigi De Canio was appointed as Head Coach and got his first taste of action against Hull City.

Hogan Ephraim’s final game of his loan spell was capped off with an excellent strike from distance to open the scoring before Mikele Leigertwood’s outstanding solo effort was expertly dispatched after a mistake from Damien Delaney.
