Queens Park Rangers defender James Perch has said he knows he has to prove himself worthy of a new deal at the club following the time he’s spent out injured this campaign.

With the 32 year old’s existing deal expiring in the summer, and he’s not alone on that score, he knows he has to be patient when it comes to his future and he has no plans to approach the club over a deal having spent almost the last six months out injured.

Instead, now he’s back fit, he’s focusing on having a strong end to the season and justifying a new deal that way.

Speaking to West London Sport he explained.

‘Obviously I`m not getting any younger – the main thing is to stay fit, hopefully play until the end of the season and see what happens at the end of it. I`m not putting any pressure on anybody to offer contracts or anything like that. I`m just going to do what I can and hopefully that`ll be enough. Nothing`s been spoken about and I never expected it to be. I`ve been injured for nearly six months, so I never expected anybody to come and talk to me about contracts. Now I`m fit and playing again, who knows?’

Having been a regular since he arrived at the club, his dislocated knee cap left him fearing he’d be out for the entire campaign after suffering the damage last August against Hull City, so being back this quick is obviously a positive.

‘At first I thought that was it, my season was finished. When I got home that night my knee was massive. Luckily I`d just dislocated and fractured it. But the medical staff here have done really well and I`ve been back in training six to eight weeks, so I`ve shaved some time off what the surgeons gave me. That`s still probably the longest spell I`ve had out since I started at 16. I`m lucky in that sense that I haven`t had too many injuries, but it`s good to be back.’

Having made his return to the side in the one nil victory over Barnsley at the beginning of February, clearly Perch will be looking for an extended run in the team for a variety of reasons.
