Martin Cranie is set to leave Portsmouth on loan with Charlton leading the race for his signature.

Charlton are vying with Coventry City and QPR for the signature of the highly rated England Under 21 defender, who has failed to make an impact at Fratton Park after breaking his leg at Loftus Road back in November.

Harry Redknapp has admitted that the Yeovil born defender needs first team experience under his belt before being considered for selection, and he would fit the bill at Charlton who search for a left back in the wake of Ben Thatcher`s departure.

During his loan period with Rangers he was utilised as a central defender, and may well be deployed there once more if the opportunity arises, with Damien Delaney making the left back spot his own.
