Championship Report – Final Whistle

Wolverhampton Wanderers remain top of the table after an excellent comeback against Charlton Athletic, here is how it happened in the Championship second half today.

The early advantage at St. Andrews was taken by 10 man Birmingham over plucky Doncaster Rovers. Cameron Jerome was the man to strike after he powered home from Marcus Bent`s flick on, his first league goal of the campaign.

Nottingham Forest managed to haul themselves level at the City ground in quite fortuitous circumstances. Robert Earnshaw reacted fasted as the ball cannoned off the cross bar, and the Welsh international had the ball bounce back off him and into the net. Earnshaw`s second goal of Championship campaign following his £2.65m move from Derby.

Watford woes continue as Sheffield Wednesday take full advantage of yet more poor defending. Full back Tommy Spurr piles the pressure onto Aidy Boothroyd to double the lead for Sheffield Wednesday. The young full back once a QPR target, was played in before slotting home with relative ease.

Sylvan Ebanks-Blake netted his first match of the season from the penalty spot. The former Manchester United forward slammed the penalty kick home down the middle to draw matters level at the Valley as table topping Wolves will be looking to extend their stay at the summit.

On loan forward Antoine Sibierski from Wigan, helped rub salt in the Plymouth wounds, as the ten men couldn`t hold out any longer. Good work by Mark Fotheringham down the right saw Sibierski in space in the area, the French forward needed no invitation to drive home on his Norwich debut. Plymouth are winless and hapless at this moment in time, and today`s performance will come as yet another worry.

63 minutes into Jon Stead`s debut for Ipswich town and he broke the deadlock in an attacking encounter at Portman Road, chances at both ends before Stead`s strike separated the two sides.

Palace doubled their lead against unlucky Swansea, who plugged away only to have a goal disallowed. Nick Carle, the Australian summer signing from Bristol City picked up the ball in a little bit of space outside the area to send an excellent low drive beyond Dorus de Vries.

Graham Alexander put Burnley back in front as the Forest defence continues to crumble, a deliberate handball lead to a Clarets spot kick, and it was Alexander to complete an unlikely brace, placing the penalty home. If you had it on your betting coupons, you`re quid`s in for sure!

Fresh from his Wales goal scoring exploits, Sam Vokes netted for Wolves as the tide finally told. Vokes beat his man at the near post before firing home on the volley. Vokes` second of the season following his move from cash-strapped AFC Bournemouth, as the natives at the Valley remain restless seeing their side`s style of play.

If the Valley was annoyed at that news, they were stunned a moment later. More excellent running from Karl Henry found its way to Michael Kightley, Kightly`s effort was parried into the path of Vokes, and he slotted home for a brace to round off an excellent week for the young Welshman.

As that news broke, Blackpool took a late lead over relegation rivals Barnsley. Loan striker Steve Kabba from Watford is out to impress and he certainly has after his effort nestled into the corner.

Ipswich doubled their advantage over Reading with just under five minutes remaining, and it was Jonathan Walters who reacted well to an excellent cross to nod home and hand the Tractor Boys the game. Slick build up play was the key as Jim Magilton continues to purport a good style of play in a bid to get Ipswich promoted.

Paul Gallagher managed to grab a 90th minute consolation for Plymouth Argyle who had resigned themselves to defeat once the sending off of Hungarian Timar, and Sibierski netting the second for Norwich. No clean sheet for Roeder`s men but three much needed points.
