RECENT HISTORY

A combination of Brian Laws and Nigel Adkins have seen the rise of Scunthorpe United to the Championship. The goals of Billy Sharp and Andy Keogh helped Adkins steer the Iron to the second-tier at the first attempt as champions of League One.

The sale of Sharp to Sheffield United prompted Adkins to break the club transfer record to sign Martin Paterson from Stoke City. It was money well spent as the striker bagged 13 goals in his first season for the Iron.

Unfortunately for them it wasn`t enough to secure their safety and they finished in 23rd place with 46 points and Paterson was sold to Burnley for just over £1,000,000. They strengthened their League One strike-force with Southend United front-man Gary Hooper for a reported £175,000.

He forged an excellent partnership with fellow forward Paul Hayes with the pair bagging 40 goals in a successful League One campaign. It looked to be in vain until the final day when they drew 1-1 with Tranmere Rovers to secure a playoff spot.

They fended off Milton Keynes Dons in the semi-final before edging out Millwall in the League One playoff final at Wembley, 3-2 – Matt Sparrow`s brace combined with £125,000 capture from York City, Martin Woolford`s effort was enough to see them to playoff glory.
