Camp to leave?

In the last few days message boards and news websites have been carrying the story that QPR are prepared to let Lee Camp leave the Club. This has arisen from Camp having lost his first-team place to Radek Cerny at the beginning of the season and seemingly being unhappy about the situation.

I have seen Camp during warm-ups in recent away games looking less than content with, what I have interpreted as, his current lot. And now Gianni Paladini has added fuel to the speculation fire by confirming that the Club would let Lee go, should he want to. Paladini is reported on many news websites as saying “I understand his position and we won’t stand in his way. He wants to play.” Paladini added, “If he goes we will want to sign another keeper.”

This has now led to media speculation that QPR will make a bid for Peterborough`s young U-21 international keeper, Joe Lewis. This is based on Tim Flowers apparently being spotted at Posh`s weekend fixture against Walsall.

I, for one, am a little confused as to how things could have turned around so quickly for Camp. A stalwart last season, having saved us time and again, he was runner-up to Martin Rowlands for player-of-the-season. Radek Cerny has not exactly inspired confidence amongst team mates and fans alike. And yet, Camp has not been given a chance this season, other than in the first round of the Carling Cup.

Fans` reports of his performance last week in the reserve fixture against Southampton, which we lost 3-2, suggest that Camp was in poor form. Some seemed to think that his attitude was wrong; there was a suggestion of complacency in his behaviour.

Obviously, if Camp were to leave the Club we would need to sign another keeper and, despite Barry Fry`s insistence today that Lewis was going nowhere, he is probably one keeper that would be a very able and exciting replacement for Camp – should we get him.

However, should the Club be letting Camp go without giving him a chance? After all, he accepted a pay-cut to join us last season instead of staying with Derby who were then in the Premier League. Should that count for anything? And why have the Club made this announcement, via Paladini, at this particular time? Should we read anything significant into that?
