Queens Park Rangers co-owner Bernie Ecclestone has come out in defence of his colleague Flavio Briatore, urging him to put his defence forward.

Briatore, the chairman of QPR Holdings, faces the axe from the Football League following his implication in the ‘Crashgate’ scandal which saw him banned from Formula One in September.

Ecclestone stated that the two sports aren’t inextricably linked and his alleged actions in Formula One should have no baring on his work at QPR.

‘Nobody is worrying about it at QPR,” said Ecclestone.

“He (Briatore) says that he was not involved in what happened in Crashgate and has maintained that. But anyway, what has that got to do with football?

“He suffered a harsh punishment in Formula One but it is not as though he could do the same thing in football.

‘He should simply tell the Football League his side of the story. Make his own case.”

Ecclestone left off by saying that there are more worthy causes for the Football League to be investigating rather than the goings-on at Loftus Road.

“The Football League should forget about Flavio Briatore and worry more about the people in football who really do need investigating.’

Briatore was banned from Formula One for his involvement in the ‘Crashgate’ scandal in the Singapore Grand Prix last year.

The FIA found him implicated in distributing orders to driver Nelson Piquet Jnr to deliberately crash his Renault.
