Angelo Balanta has moved a step closer to re-joining first-team training after recovering from a catalogue of injuries.

The Colombian-born forward has been sidelined since the first game of the season against Blackpool after an impressive pre-season for Rangers.

The young striker picked up an ankle complaint, before a groin injury and then a hernia operation have kept him out for the opening months of the campaign.

Speaking to QPR.co.uk Balanta revealed that while it will be hard to break back into the side, he is looking forward to training on a consistent basis – starting this week.

‘I’m not far away,’ he said.

‘I`ve been doing ball work with the physio, Paul Hunter, and I should be back playing hopefully soon.

‘When I get back to full-time training it will be very hard to get back into the side.

‘As you know we`re playing good football, getting good results and there`s a lot of quality players in the side so I`ll have to fight for my place, but I`m prepared to do that.’

Balanta, who scored three times in pre-season, also had words of praise for QPR boss Jim Magilton – who he says has put faith in the youngster’s ability.

He continued: ‘He’s put his faith in me and obviously that’s good as a youngster.

‘As I’m coming through there’s a lot of senior pros here, as I’m looking up to them and thinking am I going to get ahead of them, and he’s put his faith in me and I have repaid him that.’

While Balanta is very doubtful for the trip to the Keepmoat Stadium this weekend, he will be hoping to get into the squad as Rangers take on Coventry City a week on Saturday.
