As Rangers build up to the fixture against Preston North End this weekend, Gareth Ainsworth must decide whether to field himself in the first team squad.

The former Deepdale legend is still registered for another season at Loftus Road as a player and was keen to stress particularly when meeting with fans at the Loyalty Evening that he still has a role to play in this capacity.

A wry smile came across the face of Gareth Ainsworth when posed a question as to whether he`ll feature against his old club, but he has since cooled speculation that he will make an appearance against Preston.

He said: ‘I’m not going to give too much away and I know Preston will be quaking in their boots if I’m playing,

‘But probably not. It would be unfair, we have some young lads and some fit lads who have trained hard all year and waited for their chance.

‘It would probably be selfish of me to take up a place on the bench but you never know. I`m going up as a player as well as caretaker manager.

‘We’ll be going up their as underdogs but we’ll give it a real good go – we want to finish the season with a win.’

To my mind there are several players in the line-up at present that have had more than their fare share of chances, and caretaker boss Ainsworth is deserving of a starting place purely for the endeavour and passion he has put into Rangers.

He continues to feature for the reserves in a bid to keep fit and has proven he can still mix it with the players as he joins in with most training sessions.

In a game that means relatively little to most supporters would see it as welcome relief to see someone as passionate as Gareth Ainsworth take to the field and show some of the players in the current side the meaning of passion and commitment.
